Black Hawk War
Black Hawk War Black Hawk War, conflict between the Sac and Fox and the United States in 1832. After the War of 1812, whites settling the Illinois country exerted pressure on the Native Americans. A treaty of 1804, which had no real claim to validity, provided for removal of the Sac and Fox W of the Mississippi. A Native American leader, Black Hawk (1767â"1838), who was born in the Sac village near the site of present Rock Island, Ill., and who had fought for the British in the War of 1812, denounced the treaty and resisted removal. Years of intermittent skirmishing followed. In 1831 the whites used force to impose a new treaty that compelled the Native Americans to retire from their lands. In Apr., 1832, Black Hawk, with some 400 braves and their families, returned to Illinois. Not receiving the support he expected, he admitted defeat, but when one of the peaceful emissaries he sent was shot down in cold blood, the outraged Black Hawk successfully attacked a larger white force, then retired into what is now Wisconsin. A large force of volunteers was gathered under Gen. Henry Atkinson . The last battle of the war took place on the Bad Axe River, where Black Hawk was attacked by these troops and a Sioux war party. Trapped, he displayed a white flag, but this was ignored and almost all of his band, including women and children, were wiped out. Black Hawk himself escaped, surrendered to the Winnebago, was turned over for imprisonment, and was released in 1833 to return to the pitiful remnant of his tribe and his family in Iowa. Lorado Taft's colossal statue (1911) near Oregon, Ill., has come to be known as the Black Hawk Monument. See his autobiography (1833; ed. by D. Jackson, 1955); C. Analysis of Song Lyrics Free Essays
Song lyrics: looking through the window of cultural textsâ⬠¦ If you took the time to listen to the lyrics of a song instead of mumbling uselessly to the catchy melody, youââ¬â¢d notice that some bands and musical artists are informing their audience of present-time themes and issues. In todayââ¬â¢s society, song lyrics can be used effectively to find fault with many dominant values and attitudes, somewhat protesting against social issues and the preconceived ideas that stand tall on the stage of democracy. This is why song lyrics should be considered one of the most important cultural texts of the modern age. We will write a custom essay sample on Analysis of Song Lyrics or any similar topic only for you Order Now The songs Sunday Bloody Sunday by the band U2 and Hurricane by artist Bob Dylan substantiate ideas of equality and ââ¬Å"justice for allâ⬠, encouraging the listener to take a look at their own values and attitudes surrounding the issues presentedâ⬠¦ would the listener react differently if it were their life or integrity at stake? The song Sunday Bloody Sunday is one of U2ââ¬â¢s most political songs. It describes the terror experienced by an observer of the conflicts in Northern Ireland, particularly the Bloody Sunday incident in Derry where British soldiers shot and killed unarmed civil rights protestor in 1972, presenting themes of unity, ignorance and indifference. Meanwhile, Bob Dylanââ¬â¢s protest song Hurricane tells the story of the imprisonment of celebrated boxer Rubin ââ¬Å"Hurricaneâ⬠Carter, who was falsely accused of a triple murder in New Jersey, America during the mid 1960s. The song lyric explores themes of injustice, racism and discrimination, enlightening listeners about the corruption that swarmed the democratic American legal system at the time. You know, without realising it, the song you downloaded from iTunes the other day could quite possibly be criticising certain values and attitudes in society. The song Sunday Bloody Sunday by U2 supports the argument that song lyrics should be considered one of the most important cultural texts of the modern age. Throughout the song lyric, the theme of unity blossoms and grows, travelling deeper into the abyss of societyââ¬â¢s struggle to stand together. This is seen at the beginning of the song in the first verse ââ¬Å"ââ¬Ëcause tonightâ⬠¦ we can be as oneâ⬠accompanied by a military style drumbeat. Here, the chance to join together as ââ¬Å"oneâ⬠and make a difference is being offered to the listener, while the choice of instruments is symbolic to a ââ¬Å"call to armsâ⬠. Weââ¬â¢re asked to open our eyes and witness the struggle and pain that the people of Northern Ireland experienced during the early seventies, when their lives were torn apart by the bullets of British soldiers, ââ¬Å"Broken bottles under childrenââ¬â¢s feetâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Bodies strewn across the dead end streetâ⬠. The repetition of ââ¬Å"cause tonightâ⬠¦ we can be as oneâ⬠is successful in evoking a defiant and hopeful response from the listener. I also feel that the imagery created by ââ¬Å"Broken bottlesâ⬠¦bodies strewnâ⬠¦dead endâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ plants a seed of lifelessness and futility in the listenerââ¬â¢s mind. The listener is therefore encouraged to rise up and fight against the hopeless situation described in the song. Meanwhile, the song lyric Hurricane by Bob Dylan investigates the injustice that surrounded Rubin Carter and 1960s America. Being trapped in a nightmare of injustice is a very dark place to be. Loneliness and helplessness are your only friends when everyone remains blind to the truth. Bob Dylanââ¬â¢s Hurricane is a song lyric that explores this theme of injustice in 1960s New Jersey, where a common scenario was put to the ultimate test: the word of a white man against the word of a black man. The song is informing us of Rubin Carterââ¬â¢s false murder conviction, told in a somewhat story-like fashion. Bob Dylan presents the entire American legal system as corrupt and unethical, displayed in the ninth verse ââ¬Å"All of Rubinââ¬â¢s cards were marked in advanceâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The trial was a pig-circus he never had a chanceâ⬠. As well as creating emphasis through rhyme, these two lines are highly emotive, and encourage the listener to feel pity and empathy for Rubin Carter and others that may have been a victim of corruption. As a listener who lives in the twenty-first century, where cases of legal dishonesty and fraud are quite rare, I find myself sympathising with Rubin Carter and resenting the heartless and ignorant attitude possessed by 1960s America and society. In retrospect, I am extremely grateful that a fair and just trial is now available to everyone, regardless of skin colour. When the song comes to an end, the image painted in the listenerââ¬â¢s mind is that of injustice and tyranny, encouraging social change in the area of legality. Nonetheless, U2ââ¬â¢s Sunday Bloody Sunday presents the ignorance and indifference of society in times of great need. It seems that a sad face served with ââ¬Å"what a tragedyâ⬠and seasoned with taste of genuine sincerity is our best response when the TV screen shows an image of dead bodies strewn across a dead end streetâ⬠¦ U2ââ¬â¢s Sunday Bloody Sunday is a protest song that provides a dominant reading, investigating the ignorant and indifferent attitude exhibited by society towards the Bloody Sunday incident in Northern Ireland. A quote from the text highlights the 1970s unawareness of this event, and other acts of conflict across the world, ââ¬Å"And today the millions cry, We eat and drink while tomorrow they dieâ⬠. As well as making use of a hyperbole, these two lines are very effective in criticising the lack of care that society has for anyone but themselves, and as a result, depicts us as arrogant and self-righteous. Because we canââ¬â¢t empathise with the people of Derry who experienced a freakish nightmare unknown to us, all we can do is store it at the back of our minds and wait in anticipation for the next episode of Home and Awayâ⬠¦ From my point of view, there is little we can do when events such as this arise and take us by surprise. But, if society joins together in unity instead of finding refuge in the popular TV station of ignorance, then hearing those cries and feeding those mouths will become a reality. However, if weââ¬â¢re going to join together as one, then racism and discrimination need to be a thing of the past, as explored in Bob Dylanââ¬â¢s Hurricane. Racism and discrimination are two themes that refuse to leave the realms of todayââ¬â¢s society. Their defiant and unfaltering attitude must be commended, but not encouraged, as displayed in Bob Dylanââ¬â¢s Hurricane. The song lyric is successful in condemning the negative, judicious and cultured beliefs possessed by society that all black men are criminals and murderers. These motifs must be stopped in their tracks, and banished from societyâ⬠¦ The song lyric enlightens the listener of the racism and discrimination that occurred in New Jersey at the time, and reminds us that we have only taken a few steps along the path of equality since then. Within Hurricane, the extreme inequity displayed by the American police during the sixties is being crudely criticised, displayed in the seventh verse ââ¬Å"We want to put his arse in stir, We want to pin this triple murder on himâ⬠. Here, the listener receives the impression that the police (ââ¬Å"weâ⬠) are hiding something, and regardless of who committed the crime, are determined to see Carter behind bars. Based on my morals, I believe that every person, male or female, black or white, should be treated fairly and qually. Unfortunately, I wasnââ¬â¢t the judge at Rubin Carterââ¬â¢s trial. The atmosphere created in the text is that of corrupt defiance and mere narrow-mindedness, and the effect is overwhelming: I have the urge to stand up and say ââ¬Å"Hey! What youââ¬â¢re doing is wrongâ⬠¦! â⬠If only I had the power to change the path of historyâ⬠¦ For all those out there who believe that song lyrics are just another form of entertainment, think a gain. Should song lyrics be considered one of the most important cultural texts of all time? The way in which they approach certain themes and issues as well as investigate societyââ¬â¢s values, beliefs and attitudes is incredible ââ¬â therefore the answer is yes. When you look at U2ââ¬â¢s protest song Sunday Bloody Sunday, a range of themes including unity, ignorance and indifference are presented. Throughout the song, the image of helplessness is promoted, encouraging the listener to fight for unity. Also, the song criticises society for being ignorant to the death and heartache that was rife in 1970s Ireland at the time of the Bloody Sunday incident. It highlights our failure to empathise, and are portrayed as uncaring and therefore urged to put a stop to world conflict. Meanwhile, themes of injustice, racism and discrimination are explored in Bob Dylanââ¬â¢s song Hurricane. The corruption of the American legal system is the motif in this song, presenting the police, judges and jury as dishonest and unethical. The listener is positioned to respond in a sympathetic way towards Rubin Carter, and feel resentment in regard to the so-called democratic legal system. Overall, we are encouraged to accept our differences and stand together as one, moving in the direction of social change in the courts. Finally, songs are extremely successful in exploring themes and issues that are relevant to todayââ¬â¢s society, as they provide the chance to criticise and/or encourage social change regarding our values, beliefs and attitudes. ââ¬Å"Democracy doesnââ¬â¢t rule the world. Youââ¬â¢d better get that in your head; this world is ruled by violence, but I guess thatââ¬â¢s better left unsaid. â⬠Bob Dylan How to cite Analysis of Song Lyrics, Essay examples

Think on both sides of your topic When you have made up your mind concerning the topic of an essay, think not only about the point of view you are going to support but the opposite one as well. Keep in mind that you should present them in your essay, so this plays an important role. Provide evidence Sometimes students can misinterpret arguments, as they imagine them like two people, who are too emotional and speak loudly to each other. It`s not the way, which works in the academic writing. Each of your arguments should be supported by strong evidence, proof, and whether to add emotion or not, is up to you. You shouldn`t create a great drama in your essay. Just give evidence concerning both sides and then make it clear, why one of them is better, providing stronger and logical proofs as well. Writing an essay When you have gathered all necessary information, which is the basis of your essay, the next step is writing itself. The structure of an argumentative essay is similar to other assignments, you are to include there an introduction, main body paragraphs and a concluding paragraph. The length depends on your assignment requirements. Topic introduction The introductory paragraph of your essay should include the topic of your assignment, a brief explanation of what you are going to write about and, of course, a solid thesis statement to show what idea you will support through the entire essay. Present two points of view You are to show to points of view in the body paragraphs, they are to be supported by evidence and logical assumptions. It`s a good way to start with the description of a counter-side and then proceed to the idea you support. Show persuasive evidence why your point of view is a correct one. You should think well on the evidence you use. You can insert statistics, studies, quotations. Make your position clear for readers. Moreover, re-state your idea in the conclusion as well. Some additional useful tips Don`t be emotional, your arguments may sound irrational.Make your conclusion a logical one but not emotional.Your evidence should be real, don`t make up them and don`t use unreliable recourses.Make citations in a proper way.Get ready to defend your side, so learn all strong arguments of the opposite side as well.

Elvis Gyrates on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1956
Elvis Gyrates on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1956 Experienced showmen such as Ed Sullivan werent sure the world was ready for such wild moves as the slickà Elvis Presleyà was offering, but when Elvis proved too popular not to book, Sullivan scheduled him. Elvis made his first appearance on Theà Ed Sullivan Showà on September 9, 1956. Getting Booked Elvis Presley had already appeared on other national television shows (such as on Stage Show, The Milton Berle Show, and on the popular The Steve Allen Show) when Ed Sullivan booked Elvis for three shows. Elvis pelvic gyrations during his appearances on these other shows had caused much discussion and concern about the suitability of airing such provocative and sensual movements on television. Although at first Ed Sullivan said he would never want Elvis on his show, Sullivan changed his mind when The Steve Allen Show with Elvis as a guest had about twice as many viewers as Sullivans show that night (they were competing for the same audience since they were in the same time slot). After negotiating with Elvis manager, Ed Sullivan paid Elvis the huge sum of $50,000 for appearing on three of his shows: September 9, 1956, October 28, 1956, and then on January 6, 1957. Sullivan Didnt Host and Elvis Not Actually on Set For Elvis first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show on Sunday night at 8 p.m. on September 9, 1956, Ed Sullivan himself was not able to host since he had recently been in a very serious car accident that left him in the hospital. In his place, Oscar-winning actor Charles Laughton hosted the show. Elvis was also not on location in New York for the show since he was in Los Angeles for the filming of Love Me Tender. Laughton hosted from New York and then when it came time for Elvis appearance, Laughton introduced him and then cut to the stage in Hollywood with Elvis. Elvis Performance Elvis appeared on a stage with large, artistic guitars as decoration. Wearing a plaid jacket and holding his guitar, Elvis thanked Mr. Laughton and the audience and then said,à This is probably the greatest honor that Ive ever had in my life. Theres not much I can say except that hope it makes you feel good and we want to thank you from the bottom of our heart. Elvis then sang, Dont Be Cruel with his four back-up singers (the Jordanaires) followed by Love Me Tender, which was the not-yet-released title track from his new movie. During this second set, Elvis sang Ready Teddy and then ended with a portion of Hound Dog. Throughout Elvis entire performance, viewers could hear girls in the audience screaming, especially when Elvis did his special twitch or swung his hips or swiveled his legs. Elvis appeared to enjoy himself, frequently smiling or even laughing, which made him seem friendly, sweet, and hunkyà - depending on who was watching. Censored During Elvis first performance on The Ed Sullivan Show,à the cameras stayed mostly from the waist up during the first half of Elvis appearance, but during the second time he appeared that night, the camera widened out and the TV audience was able to see Elvis gyrations. While many have felt that Elvis was censored by only showing him from the waist up onà The Ed Sullivan Show, that really only happened during Elvis third appearance, on January 6, 1957. For some still unknown reason (although there are a lot of rumors as to why), Sullivan allowed Elvis to only be shown from the waist up during that third and final show. It Was a Breakthrough Performance Elvis appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show was a major success. Over 60 million people, both young and old, watched the show and many people believe it helped bridge the generation gap for Elvis acceptance into the mainstream.

Ethical Issues Involved in Animal Testing Essay
Ethical Issues Involved in Animal Testing - Essay Example 3). Another argument that contests animal testing is the moral status animals. It was noted that animalsââ¬â¢ capacity to feel pleasure or pain equate them to humans in terms of moral status. The arguments on the moral status of animals were discussed extensively in Standford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. One argument was contended by Kant in his Lectures on Ethics, highlighed as follows: ââ¬Å"we have indirect duties to animals, duties that are not toward them, but in regard to them insofar as our treatment of them can affect our duties to personsâ⬠(Kant, 1997, p. 240). Animal Testing is Ethical It has been revealed that the argument for or against animal testing actually stemmed from the views of philosophers (Mukerjee, 1997). As disclosed, Peter Singer, an Australian philosopher and a writer of Animal Liberation, allegedly supported the utilitarian theory which espoused that ââ¬Å"in all decisions the total amount of good that resultsââ¬âhuman and animalââ¬âshould be weighed against the sufferingââ¬âhuman and animalââ¬âcaused in the process. Not that to him the interests of humans and animals have equal weight: life is of far greater value to a human than, for example, to a creature with no self-awarenessâ⬠(Mukerjee, 1997, p. 87). Apparently, the philosophy of utilitarianism was identified with John Stuart Mill, who espoused that ââ¬Å"in any given situation the right action would be the action that tended to minimize the suffering and pain, and maximize the pleasure and happiness, of all interested parties. He further thought that the suffering, pain, pleasure and happiness of animals should be included in this calculusâ⬠(Branham, 2005,... ETHICS (Nietzsche, Daly, and Beauvoir) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
ETHICS (Nietzsche, Daly, and Beauvoir) - Essay Example These traditions are nihilistic in the sense that they deny an actual life as the will to power. In additions, they create a moral of order of evil and good that applies to everyone in spite of individual differences. In this sense, evil is what contains harm to the masses. Nietzsche, therefore, explains that the salve morality pushes an individual to condemn oneââ¬â¢s strengths and ignore oneââ¬â¢s basic instincts. Master morality is the savior for the individual suffering under the yokes of slave morality. Nietzsche explains master morality as having the control over oneââ¬â¢s own will to power (Nietzsche 116). This means ignoring the will of the absolutist world thereby living according to oneââ¬â¢s personality and instincts. Master morality means egoism that devotes to self-elevation. The self becomes the center of life and it deserves glorification and constant nurturing. In this sense, the only good thing is that that enhances the feeling of power in a person. Master morality supersedes the traditional definition of the good and the evil. The death of god seeks to detach the person from the mystical world. It is crucial to highlight that Nietzsche supreme view of concrete life guides most of his philosophical thoughts, including the death of god. The philosopher points out to an invalid eternal world and highlights the demise of subjective values that have unfortunately become the mode of contemporary life. This is not necessarily an act of contempt towards the idea of Supreme Being, but it seeks to liberate the individual from delusions. An individual becomes free to articulate oneââ¬â¢s life according to individually set morals. This is a path to fulfillment since a person commits to the life that one sees rather than be detained by a moral order that is inconsistent with the concrete needs of the individual. Transformation from all values refers to redefinition of morality to suit the individual disposition. It involves detaching oneself from

Classics - Tragedy :: English Literature
Classics - Tragedy It seems that the nearly all critics of Medea are unanimous in one prominent feature of the play alone, and that is in their immense abhorrence for Jason. Kitto says 'In him (Jason) it is impossible to find anything that is not meanà ´, while Lucas says 'Jason is utterly selfish, and utterly unconscious of his selfishness'. It is hard to find anything kind about Jason as on face value he is such an obvious villain. But all these comments on the Medea centre round a study of Medea herself, while making passing comments on Jason, as and when they see fit, yet they all see Jason as the other main character in the play. When one devotes the largest proportion of study on Jason, rather than Medea, a picture of kinder, caring Jason is created. Thus I believe that a case can be made for Jason - he is no paragon of kindness or any good quality, but he does not quite deserve such comments as 'The unrelieved baseness of Jason is revolting'. Vellacott says in his introduction to the play that 'to appreciate the balance of this play we must take care not to pre-judge Jason'. This is an essential point to make, as Jason has all the elements of a typical villain - he has a wife who devoted his life to him, yet he now deserts her for his own sexual satisfaction. Yet as Jason says himself, on numerous occasions, he is not getting married for solely for his own merit, but for those of Medea and his children as well: 'It's not for the sake of any woman that I have made this royal marriage, but, as I've already said, to ensure your future... and build security for us all' (P.35) Such speeches and comments cannot just be ignored - he says this as these are his genuine motivations, the reasons why he has gone about his actions. The nurse, a character who in the early stages is heavily biased against Jason, even says 'Jason is a prisoner in a princess' bed' (P.4) Whether Euripides meant this to mean that he was literally a prisoner, or just captive to her good looks we cannot be sure, but either way she is showing that Jason cannot be completely at fault. Jason is acting just like most men in his position would - Medea is an exile, so Jason is not bound to her in marriage in the true spirit, and as we have seen, she is being betrayed for her own benefit[page]. My Ideal Wife
My Ideal Wife, a Descriptive Essay A popular saying goes, ââ¬Å"Marriage involves three rings: the engagement ring, the wedding ring, and the suffering. â⬠If it is commonly felt that marriage is so difficult, why do most people wish to get married? Probably, the instinct to find a mate is inherent in human beings; and I am no exception. Somehow, I believe that there is someone out there who was made especially for me, and, once I find her, we will fall in love, and get married; and only then will I feel complete. So, how will I recognize the right girl for me?What qualities should I be looking for? It is very important to have a person you can always rely on. I want my wife to be this person. She would be tightly connected with my life. I want to wake up by her tender kiss. The first thing I would see would be her smiling face. She would make a breakfast for us. We would call each other from time to time during all day. In the evening I want to have dinner with her, cooked by her, and fall asleep holding my arm s around her. First of all, my future wife should be my best friend. I want to share all my troubles, sorrows and dreams with her.She would never let me down and I could always rely on her. Secondly, I want my wife to be my partner. Everything would be common for us: our children, our house, our money, and duties. And we would have to make important decisions together. They should be sensible and reasonable. Also, we should trust each other. Next, I want to have a good mother for my future children. She should be warm-hearted, gentle, understanding, and sometimes strict with them because a mother plays more important role in bringing up children than a man does.I wish my children were worthy members of modern society. Then, my wife should be an elegant and a good-looking woman. I want her to have smartness and beauty combined. Nowadays it is quite difficult to find a girl who is smart and beautiful at the same time but I will do my best to find her. Character is more important than looks. I cannot deny that I am attracted to good-looking girls, but marrying solely for physical attraction will probably lead to short term pleasure but life-long regret. I have also noticed that beautiful women are often vain and rrogant, which I find most unattractive. One of the main things that I admire in a woman is humility. Such a woman will not boast about her wealth, intelligence or achievements, but, instead appreciate other people's abilities and achievements. She will also readily admit when she has made a mistake. Such a woman would be a joy to live with. Good communication is the key to any solid relationship, most of all, marriage. I would want my future wife to share her thoughts with me. I want to hear her dreams and to share in her struggles. On the other hand, I will also need someone who will be ready to listen to me, and interested to know what is happening in my life. There should be no secrets between us. Life is full of challenges. We can expect to face failu re as well as success; heartache as well as joy; boredom as well as excitement. So, the perfect wife should have a positive attitude and a good sense of humour. She should be witty and say things which make me laugh. The perfect wife would also be one who can see the silver lining behind every cloud, rather than focus on the flaws in every situation. With such a woman, I will be encouraged to look at life in a happier and more positive way. Above all other qualities, the perfect wife will be faithful. She must be someone who really believes in that marriage is made to last ââ¬Å"till death do us partâ⬠. She will be totally committed to our relationship, and willing to stay for the long haul, ââ¬Å"in sickness and in health, for better or for worseâ⬠; as couples promise in the wedding vows. The perfect wife would not be distracted by other men; not even when I have lost my looks. He would be a ââ¬Å"one man womanâ⬠.In return, I will also promise my total loyalty and faithfulness to my future wife. Actually, there are many other qualities that make a woman an ideal wife. However, while it is easy to make lists, finding a woman to live up to them will be very difficult. Furthermore, instead of focusing on my requirements for the perfect wife, I think I should recognize my own imperfections, and set about correcting them. As Barnett Brickner said, ââ¬Å"Success in marriage does not come merely through finding the right mate, but through being the right mate. ââ¬Å"
